FRIENDS R FAMILY FAMILY is Steve’s third release as a leader and his first release to feature all-original compositions. The Baltimore native shifts seamlessly between hard-swinging straight ahead jazz and an infectious, groove-oriented, contemporary – fusiony jazz, r&b influenced concept.
ABOUT STEVE CARRINGTON
After studying at Berklee with the great Bill Pierce (Jazz Messengers, Tony Williams Quintet), Steve moved to New York and amassed per-formance credits, including the Charles Mingus Epitaph project, Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Hargrove, plus Frank Wess and Jimmy Heath (at the same time!), among many others.
In in the Baltimore/Washington area, he performed with Ruby Glover, Phillip Harper, Teodross Avery, Grady Tate, Cyrus Chestnut , (who featured Steve on his third Atlantic album “Earth Stories” (alongside Antonio Hart and Eddie Allen) , a long tenure with group Kool & The Gang as well as playing with the Dizzy Gillespie all – star and Latin experience band.
A participant teacher in the Jazz Mentoring Program faculty at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center, among his students was the highly sought – after drummer Quincy Phillips.
Returning to New York, Carrington sat in and performed with Elvin Jones, Joey DeFrancesco, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Wynton Marsalis, Wessell ‘Warmdaddy’ Anderson, Eric Lewis (ELEW) and Chick Corea.
Steve’s debut album A Caring Tone ( 2014) was followed by Mind Traveler (2019) and now the all original Friends R Family.
