On May 1st 2016, Cuban-born pianist, percussionist, composer and bandleader Omar Sosa, will be headlining the world-famous London jazz venue, Ronnie Scott’s.
Over the course of the last 30 years, the seven-time Grammy-nominated artist has fused a distinctive compositional style combining his respect for his AfroCuban spirituality with jazz, hip-hop, world-music elements and electronica.
Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano
Omar will be making his debut Ronnie Scott’s performance alongside members of his Quarteto AfroCubano in support of their most recent CD, Ile. This startling new work (Ile means home or earth in Yoruba) marks a return to Omar’s native Cuba for musical and artistic inspiration. It also updates classic Cuban music rhythms with a contemporary twist.
This dynamic ensemble includes Cuban drummer Ernesto Simpson, Cuban saxophonist and flautist, Leandro Saint Hill, and Mozambican electric bassist, Childo Tomas.
Featuring acoustic grand piano and Fender Rhodes, Omar’s set list will include a mix of ballads and sophisticated mid and up tempo arrangements including a version of the well known Cuban trova composer Sindo Garay’s La Tarde.
On April 30th 2016, Omar Sosa and his Quarteto AfroCubano perform at Cheltenham Jazz Festival for International Jazz Day.
