Clarinetist and saxophonist Victor L. Goines is Juilliard’s first Director of Jazz Studies, and conductor of the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, an integral part of the new Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies. Mr. Goines has been a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra since 1993. He is an acclaimed solo artist and leads his own quintet. His fourth recording as a leader, Sunrise to Midnight, was released in 2000. Born in 1961 and raised in New Orleans, he began studying clarinet at age eight. He received a bachelor of music education degree from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1984, and a master of music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 1990. He toured with the Ellis Marsalis Quartet before joining the orchestra of the Broadway musical Black and Blue. In 1993 he toured as a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet until joining the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra the following year. In addition to performing, Mr. Goines is committed to his work in jazz education, and became an education consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center in 1998. Previously he had been assistant professor of jazz saxophone/woodwinds and jazz studies at Florida A&M University, and has conducted clinics and workshops for the Greater New Orleans–Suzuki Foundation, Cornell University and the Columbus Youth Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Goines has recorded or performed with Terence Blanchard, Bo Diddley, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Green, Lionel Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, Branford Marsalis, James Moody, and Dianne Reeves, among others. He also is a member of Juilliard’s jazz studio faculty, teaching reeds.
In 2001 Juilliard introduced jazz into its curriculum for the first time with the creation of the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies, a collaboration of Juilliard and Jazz at Lincoln Center. In addition to the faculty, headed by Victor L. Goines, students benefit from regular master classes and appearances by guest artists who are among some of the most celebrated names in jazz. In the fall of 2003, The Juilliard School inaugurates its bachelor of music degree in jazz studies as part of its undergraduate curriculum. In addition, in 2003 guitar will be added to the roster of instrumentalists who may audition for Juilliard’s jazz program.
