On February 18th RCA/Bluebird will release Freak In, the latest CD from world-renowned trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas. Freak In (Douglas’ twentieth recording as a leader) is the follow up to the Grammy nominated CD, The Infinite, and a tireless pathfinder’s adventurous journey through the world of jazztronica.
Bluebird’s legendary Flying Dutchman catalog captured the musical zeitgeist of the late sixties and early seventies with gritty funk meeting driving rock and soulful jazz. This new language, now known as “rare grooves” by the musical cognoscenti, is driving DJ culture around the world.

The MRC Trio, Hugh Marsh violin, Barry Romberg drums, and Rufus Cappadocia cello, hits the road for their Canadian Tour beginning in early March.
Columbus, Ohio-raised, New York City-based violinist Christian Howes will perform one set of music with his acoustic violin, piano, and bas trio. Joining Christian will be Argentinian native Federico Lechner, pianist, and Ugonna Okegwo on bass.
Where: Cape May Convention Hall, Cabanas, Grand Hotel Ballroom, Carney¹s, Savannah Key (at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel), Star of the Sea Auditorium, Congress Hall, The Boiler Room, Corinthian Yacht Club, Pelican Club . On Thursday, February 27 at 8 PM in the Juilliard Theater, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra plays music of big band innovator Stan Kenton in a concert entitled Stan: The Music of Stan Kenton. Victor Goines, Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at Juilliard, conducts. The first half of the program includes such Kenton signature works as Artistry in Rhythm, Opus in Pastels, Youngblood, Concerto to End All Concertos, What’s New?, Interlude, and Kingfish. The second half of the concert features Cuban Fire Suite, Kenton’s famously exciting combination of big-band power and Cuban rhythms.

How can he not be, when he has inborn talent; as well as indelible musical influences like Louis Prima, Sam Butera’s immortal sax virtuosity, Al Hirt’s trumpet beauty, and Boots Randolf’s sax excellence to grow from. Tin ears would fair well in that kind of musical environment.
