The general public is invited to the Les Brown Centennial Weekend in Tower City, PA on March 23 – 25. This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Les’ birth.
The Les Brown Dance is on Friday, March 23, 7:00 pm at Kevin’s Place in Lykens. It features 2 hours of swing dance music by the valley’s big band, After Hours (www.theafterhoursbigband.com) . Admission is $10 per person. Food and drinks are available at menu prices.
On Saturday, the Les Brown Centennial Festival begins at noon in the Williams Valley High School auditorium. Participating in the festival will be the Manhattan Dolls (www.themanhattandolls.com), the Unforgettable Big Band (www.unforgettablebigband.com), the Elizabethtown College Jazz Band and local high school bands. Special festival guests are Les Brown Jr, Jeff “Swampy” Marsh (Les Sr.’s grandson and the co-creator of Disney Channel’s popular cartoon, Phineas & Ferb). Former members of the Band of Renown: Rusty Higgins, alto saxophonist and Don Clarke, trumpet will present a free jazz workshop for high school and college students and band directors. David Miller, host of National Public Radio’s “Swingin’ Down the Lane” (www.swingindownthelane.comm) will interview the festival guests between band performances. The festival ends at 7 pm. Food vendors will be on site throughout the day. Admission is $8.00 per person; students, up through college with ID, are free.
Sunday, March 27 will end the weekend with a jazz service. It will be a non-denominational service at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Williamston starting at 2:00. The service is open to the public. A free will offering will be taken.
