The Newport Jazz Festival was the first event of its kind when it started up in 1954, and 57 years later, it’s still breaking new ground. The festival drew big crowds this weekend in Newport, R.I. Its founder and current producer, the 85-year-old jazz impresario George Wein, sat down with The Daily to talk about what makes Newport such a success, and how new generations of musicians are constantly reinvigorating this great American art form.
