On Thursday, February 27 at 8 PM in the Juilliard Theater, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra plays music of big band innovator Stan Kenton in a concert entitled Stan: The Music of Stan Kenton. Victor Goines, Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at Juilliard, conducts. The first half of the program includes such Kenton signature works as Artistry in Rhythm, Opus in Pastels, Youngblood, Concerto to End All Concertos, What’s New?, Interlude, and Kingfish. The second half of the concert features Cuban Fire Suite, Kenton’s famously exciting combination of big-band power and Cuban rhythms.

Columbus, Ohio-raised, New York City-based violinist Christian Howes will perform one set of music with his acoustic violin, piano, and bas trio. Joining Christian will be Argentinian native Federico Lechner, pianist, and Ugonna Okegwo on bass.

I took a walk on Lonely Street today courtesy of a great blues-rock band named The Dare Ya Blues Band. Well, ya gotta love the name of the band, its original and it tickles your funny bone. Although their name may make you chuckle, make no mistake, they are one serious blues rockin’ band.

This is basically a trio ensemble, with the exception being the addition
of Toots Thielemans on track 7.

“My Happy Kids” is the highlight of this recording. This tune is done
up tempo with an almost boppish feel and a fine piano solo by pianist /
bassist Richard Drexler gives it a happy lilt.
