CodeName was created by saxophonist and composer in 2011. The group combines two major genres, jazz and stand up comedy. The initial influence and idea came from Garrison’s thoughts that following a great jazz musician’s stylistic progress mirrors the same evolution of a great stand up comedian; content widens, delivery becomes smoother, and comfort level increases. Also, the ability to “play” for the moment, or switch gears easily becomes less of a burden. In CodeName, all of the actual music is written by Garrison himself. It covers a wide array of styles within the genre of jazz itself. The comedian’s role is that of another frontline horn type of instrument. The comic has predetermined sections of the music where they “solo” but the music and feeling of the band is loose and organic. The beautiful thing about jazz improvising and stand up comedy is that it is an ever evolving entity and CodeName is no exception.
