Hooper is a multiple Grammy nominee and a recipient of many national and international awards and citations. He is considered to be one of the world’s top drummer/percussionists, and is best known to music fans around the globe as the founder of the Crusaders, the seminal instrumental group famed for their amalgamated jazz sound.
He has also performed and recorded with many of the “who’s who” in the music world.

With his ensemble, Viewpoint, Hooper resurfaces and returns to the stage with a performance October 28th, at Zipper Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Utilizing all the diverse elements that have contributed to his unique style and musicianship, such as his early classical training, his roots in rhythm and blues, the adventure, creativity and improvisation of jazz, Hooper sees the opportunity to express himself along with his colleagues and share this experience with his audience.

Viewpoint is a progressive instrumental based project and is one of Hooper’s many musical endeavors. According to Hooper, “It is my intent to provide a setting for adventurous improvisation, spontaneity, composition, sonic exploration, harmonic and rhythmic creativity and personal expression.” He adds, “Jazz is the familiar term that encompasses most of these elements, but I strive to take it a step beyond.”

Along with Hooper on drums and percussion, Viewpoint musicians include Scott Mayo, woodwinds; Del Atkins, bass; and, Eugene Maslov, piano/keyboards. Special guest, Hubert Laws, 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award Honoree was recently announced, and along with other guests, this concert will showcase Hooper’s many eclectic and varied talents.

“There are infinite possibilities in the world of music and the creative arts, where the boundaries are clearly self-imposed,” Hooper says. “I plan to explore all avenues in the world of music, with this performance and in all things I do, all the way from the original creative process through its development into a form that is both artistically gratifying and accessible to people universally.”
