The recording first took seed in August 2009, just as Biali was leaving for Il Palagio – Sting’s Italian estate in Tuscany. Biali had secured a role singing back up for his DVD production and winter tour of If On a Winter’s Night… Live from Durham Cathedral and arrived at the villa to meet the award-winning singer for a series of rehearsals. Fresh off two years of touring with Chris Botti, Paula Cole, and Suzanne Vega, the collaboration with Sting gave her new energy to begin forming a plan for her next recording project.
The 30 year old singer and pianist’s disc is an inspired collection of songs written by Imogen Heap, K.D. Lang, Daniel Lanois, Billy Joel, standards popularized by Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Doris Day, and several of her original compositions.
For Biali, Tracing Light is the culmination of her work with world-renowned artists, tour dates at world-class venues spanning five continents, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall, the acclaimed North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the International Jazz Festival in Lima, Peru and the Cotton Club in Tokyo, Japan, and numerous accolades including SOCAN composer of the year and Keyboardist of the year at the National Jazz Awards.
